Just two scones

I’m not sure if it’s just me (it wouldn’t be the first time…), but sometimes I bake things and get sick of them after a few servings.  Maybe that sounds lame – it’s just that I don’t necessarily want to eat banana bread every day for weeks in a row.  I like diversity.  I want to be able to have oats or toast or grits or something else in the morning without worrying about my precious baked goods going bad.  Most of the time I end up freezing the leftovers (imagine how great of a… Read more >

I heart holiday food

This year, I’ll be going to: 3 Thanksgivings 2 Christmases 1 holiday party Which means my foodie brain has been in overdrive since October.  What to make, what to make, hmmm… Here’s what I look for in a recipe: Does it call for ingredients I have on hand/use often? (I don’t like buying a rare/expensive item for one recipe that I’ll never use again) Do I like all the ingredients in the recipe? (Seems obvious) Will I have to/am I able to make any substitutions?  (If a recipe calls for dairy, I can swap that… Read more >

Holiday leftover solution

I realize certain things are not meant to be photographed.   Stew is one of those things.  [Same goes for certain angles of my pregnant body.  And the spider web situation we have going on in the front yard.  And Kyle’s closet.  No seriously, it’s out of control.]   Maybe Ansel Adams could make this look tasty, but I am working with an iPhone at 5 am in a poorly lit kitchen.  Natural sunlight, what??  Just trust me.  It’s good.   Leftover Crock-Pot Stew [vegan, gluten free] Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 yellow onion… Read more >

You know how I said I got a head of cauliflower at the farmer’s market this past weekend?  Well guess what?  Meant to be. Cauli meet Staub.  You two will be good friends by the end of the night.   Chunky Rosemary Cauliflower Soup [vegan, gluten free] Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 large yellow onion, diced 1 large head of cauliflower, chopped into small florets 3 cups vegetable broth 1/2 cup chickpeas + 1/2 cup chickpea liquid (that it was cooked in or canned with) 1/2+ tsp rosemary (more to taste) 1/2 tsp… Read more >

Elise Lately [III]

I got a HUGE head of cauliflower at the farmer’s market.  I think it’s going to provide enough for multiple meals – I’m thinking this soup, these “steaks”, and/or some kind of recreation of this appetizer. I didn’t get any squash while there, but found these guys amusing. I made this loaf the same way I make every other loaf and it somehow ended up all squat?  It tasted the same, so I’m not sure what happened.  I used a different kind of yeast (organic Rapunzel was cheaper than Red Star when I went shopping… Read more >
