2 1/2 hours for 2 1/2 inches

Yesterday, after my pancakes had digested, I squished a run into the morning (squished being the operative word).  It was 26 minutes long and I was in such a rush to shower and get ready afterwards that I seriously neglected my post-workout stretching.  Bad runner!   Knowing it would be a mistake to leave without eating first, I whipped this up on my way out the door.  I was so friggin’ rushed that in between pulsing the bullet, I was tearing through my closet, jabbing mascara into my lashes, and chucking whatever I could grab… Read more >

Chemistry and cornbread

I got a few questions following this post, when I mentioned that I was starting the fructans challenge phase. In the aforementioned post I listed what foods contained fructans (garlic, onion, wheat, inulin, etc.), but maybe I should back up even more.  I have a chemistry background, but for those of you who do not, I’ll try to simplify this as best as I can without abandoning the key concepts or overwhelming you. Carbohydrate: a macronutrient in food that is made up with a single sugar molecule or multiples of them in various forms.  [protein… Read more >

Coffee ‘n cakes

Remember back when I thought my body was through with coffee?  Ha!  What a joke.  Obviously I was in a weird place… I’m still attempting to keep my daily dose to one cup(ish).  Some days it’s no problem, but other days (ie work days), I get major hankerings for an afternoon pick-me-up in the form of caffeine.  I got this in the mail last week (a perk of being in the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program). Two of their medium roasts will now be available at local grocery stores…and I get to try them!   I made… Read more >

What the wheat

If you’re wondering why there have been more giveaway posts and Spain recaps than daily eats lately, it’s because I’ve been doing the fructans challenge phase.  And I’m not thrilled with it.  At first I was nervous about reintroducing fructans, then I was excited, then I went overboard… I actually started last week, but had such horrible symptoms, I went back to the elimination diet for two days in between, just to allow my body to rest and re-set. I’ll share my reactions and symptoms in more detail at the end (ie once I’ve sorted… Read more >

The Westin’s Worst

May 14th started with an 0730 rise and shine to re-pack and set out.  My dad and I attempted to locate a “supermercado” while the rest of the fam ate at the local croissanteria (pretty sure my dad made up that name).  No luck. We caught taxis and in true Dieden fashion arrived at the bus station 55 minutes early.  I read Tina Fey’s book on the world’s most uncomfortable bench and at last it was time to board.  Off to Madrid! Shockingly I dozed off for most of the trip.  I woke up once… Read more >
