Animal free Vitamin C

I love Emergen-C drink powders, especially the Pink (breast cancer) flavor, but some of the ingredients leave me scratching my head.  Since I’m trying to be much more vigilant about labels, I figured there’s no better source than the people who make the product.  Ask and you shall receive.  To clear up the confusion, here’s info directly from the company. Which of your products contain animal derivatives? Joint Health contains chondroitin which is bovine-derived. As of March 2009, Joint Health is shellfish-free. Boxes manufactured prior to March 2009 contain glucosamine which is shellfish-derived. Emergen-C Pink®… Read more >

Vampire hours

My second night shift was as uneventful as my first (just the way I like it).  I did feel like a vampire though, not just because I was awake all night, but because I was constantly waking my patients up to suck draw their blood.  I try to cluster my care so they get as much rest as possible, but when multiple labs are required throughout the shift, it makes it hard (on them and me).  Ah well, what can ya do?  There’s little that makes me happier than troponins trending down.  Ok, that’s not… Read more >

Nighty night

Soooo, I’m back on night shifts for the week.  🙁 In an effort to get my sleep schedule as off whack as possible, I stayed up ‘til 1 am on Monday night and slept in ‘til 9 am on Tuesday. Breakfast: quinoa with strawberries, bananas, cinnamon and peanut butter Since starting out on the low FODMAPS journey, I’ve been… Read more >

Yellow cupcakes

A long time ago I was contacted by Wholesome Chow, a company that sells vegan (and some gluten-free) baking mixes. They sent me a vanilla cake mix – vegan, organic, fair trade, casein, peanut, wheat & gluten free.  The ingredients are all recognizable (always a good thing) and the company has eco-friendly practices , plus they use locally sourced ingredients. Could the steps be any simpler?  [you have to say that with a Chandler accent] 1.  Add non-dairy milk and apple cider vinegar together and let them curdle. I used almond milk.  Once it got… Read more >

Breaking up is hard to do

I mentioned last month that I was trying to wean myself off stevia, and so many people had questions about why.  So I thought maybe I’d share in more detail.  **However, in the time it took me to actually write the post about this decision, so much has already changed and my choice to switch to agave is no longer applicable.  Rather than elaborate on what led to my initial decision, I will give you the full story, and where I am now.*** I have a sweet tooth.  A major sweet tooth.  Not that I’m… Read more >
