Simply smile

The other day I had a unique take on oatmeal for breakfast. It wasn’t really oatmeal.  Nor was it breakfast.  Nor was it intentional. After night shift, I slept in ‘til noon and then woke up to spend my Friday with Kyle.  After lounging the morning away, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go for a run or eat something.  I decided to put a pot of oats on the stove, but by the time they were done, I had changed my mind.  So I turned the stove off and left the oats while… Read more >

Larabars for you

I didn’t get a lunch sleep break last night because there was a code on the unit right when my break should have been.  Clearly a patient’s life trumps my snooze time, so I just kept powering through the night sans rest.  It was a long code (holy chest compressions batman!) and the third of the night in the hospital, but it ended with a beating heart and oxygenated blood, and that’s all you can hope for, right?  Right.  I had a delicious dinner packed up. The salad had spinach, sprouts, farro (love!), hummus, bell… Read more >

Happy Friday and Happy April (fools)!  My parents are en route to So Cal at the moment, which thrills me to no end.  I’m so excited that the weather has finally decided to cooperate when my family is visiting.  Almost every other time the hippie clan visits, the rain clouds roll in.  No me gusta. On the contrary, me encanta MUCHO these babies.  If you’re not looking to brush up on your espanol, allow me to translate: these Mitica Spanish Cocktail nuts (from Whole Foods) are legit.   Too legit to quit, in fact.  Like… Read more >

Status Quo

Like I mentioned in my last post, I was on night shift last night.  It was a pretty crazy day all around.  Usually Mondays are pretty chaotic in general because the hospital tends to come to a stand-still over the weekend.  As a result, Mondays are full of catch-up tests and procedures and whatnot.  This weekend was extraordinarily busy with the LA marathon…especially since the hospital I work at is located at mile marker 18.  Given the extra admits (runners), the spillover lasted well into Monday, and so my shift last night was on the… Read more >

So…yeah or nay?

The combo of daylight savings and working night shifts allows for food photography with much improved lighting.  At least that’s the silver lining I’m choosing to embrace (as opposed to the fact that I lost an hour and then had to pull an all nighter).   If I had pendant lighting in the kitchen, this wouldn’t be an issue, but I don’t.  As a result, my late night food pics are sometimes lacking.  No matter what camera settings I use, there’s no substitute for natural sunlight.  So.  Yeah.  About that night shift… This So-Yah Creamy Coconut… Read more >
