Philly: Red eye

I’m getting too old to do red eye flights.  That’s what I decided after this weekend.  I thought it would be like working night shift, but it’s not.  The combo of the time change and being confined to a middle seat – yikes.  Not for me. So as you can imagine, we didn’t exactly hit the ground running.  My parents’ flight arrived before ours, so they were waiting for us when we finally touched down at 6 am. We cabbed it over to the hotel to drop off our bags, but since it was way… Read more >

Philly Preview

AKA Why I wasn’t at the BLEND retreat this year. It’s been 5 years since I graduated from nursing school.  And 30 years since my dad graduated from medical school. And since we both went to school in Philadelphia… It meant a reunion trip was in order. I rarely mention my Philly days on the blog (not for any particular reason).  But I enjoyed my time there and thus welcomed the trip back.  Plus it’s always fun to see my parents. When I look back on it, the city of brotherly love is where I… Read more >

Readers request: protein powder

Protein powders aren’t something I use frequently because I prefer getting my nutrients from whole foods.  However, for someone on a plant based, low FODMAP diet, protein is definitely an important macronutrient to monitor.  For the record: I don’t count my caloric intake.  I don’t track my protein, fat, or carbs.  I know other people do, and I know there are many health benefits to doing so, but personally I don’t have the time or energy for that kind of detail.  I know quite a bit about nutrition and I am very mindful with my… Read more >

Savory Hash

Ready for an unconventional breakfast?   Tea in a coffee cup.  Why I felt like this as opposed to this is a mystery. By the way, this photo is false advertising since I added a hefty pour of almond milk afterwards.  I like my tea (and coffee) the color of the discontinued light brown M&M’s.  Creamy.  The second reason this breakfast is unconventional (for me), is that I went savory as opposed to sweet.  And there are no grains to be found!   Recently, my mother-in-law and I had a discussion about breakfast fare. … Read more >

Country Clubs

My parents belong to a Country Club.  You can roll your eyes.  They are still hippies…they just like golfing too.  And composting.  Anyway.  My dad’s on the Board of Directors and he’s been slowly pushing my vegan agenda. Look!  Progress!!  He asked for a veg meal and got a lima bean tofu chili.  I’m so proud. :)  To me, the Country Club scene is where preppy white people go to compare Rolex watches and Sperry Topsiders.  And eat fancy food, like oysters, filet mignon, and foie gras.  So tofu chili!?!  Now we are making big… Read more >
