Sweet and spicy salad

Sometimes I brainstorm for hours before a meal and still have no clue what I want.  And other times ingredients come together in my mind and suddenly – bam – I have a recipe that I need to make immediately.   Last Saturday, as I headed to the farmer’s market, both lunch and dinner were unplanned.  And within 10 minutes of strolling the Promenade I had each one envisioned crystal clear.  I seized the momentary genius.  I already showed you the vegan cheesy grits I made for dinner.  Lunch was the salad I’m about to… Read more >

Siesta-less

I slept in foreverrrrr on my second day in Spain.  It’s not surprising since my first day lasted nearly 38 hours.  My dad was the one who woke me up and it was almost noon when he did.  Noon!  Let’s get this show on the road! Yeah, act surprised.  Soymilk is hard impossible to come by in normal Spanish cafes.  Trust me, I asked.  Hence the Bux. After the late start to the day, our agenda was packed, just the way I like vacations to be.  Traveling with my family is awesome because we balance… Read more >

Saturday grits

Not that you asked, but Kyle lived in the south (Hot-lanta what what) for a majority of his childhood.  He emailed me from work the other day requesting grits.  I replied asking if he liked his grits with cheese or with butter.  He responded: yes.  Ha! This isn’t the version I made him (which was not vegan).  This is, however, the version I reinvented for myself on Saturday night. I had zucchini and squash from the farmer’s market…and the vision of them sautéed in oil and vinegar on top a steaming hot bed of cheesy… Read more >

Mutual failures

The couple that fails together stays together.  Wait.  That’s not right.    Yesterday’s green black monster was epically disgusting.  I actually gagged when I tasted it.  I know what you’re thinking…Elise, WHY on Earth did you taste that necrotic infested swamp slush?  Good question.  Sometimes things look gross but actually taste really good!  Case in point: home-made log seitan.  So I thought maybe this was one of those things.  But it was not.  Very very not.  If anyone is considering buying this brand of protein powder, DON’T.  Just don’t.  Unless you have a fondness for… Read more >

Sharing is caring

I have a few things I’m realllly into right now, and I feel like sharing them. 1. Our weekend farmer’s market routine. I got 3 bunches of kale, 4 zucchini, 2 yellow squash, 3 ears of corn and a partridge in a pear tree for $9. 2. Ally McBeal I never watched this show when it was on in the 90’s but I am loving it right now.  I had the urge to start watching it after reading Portia De Rossi’s book (whoa intense btw).  Fortunately Netflix has the show on demand.  Being sick (read:… Read more >
