By the seat of my pants

While I enjoy others cooking for me, I also like making my own food because I want my meals a very specific way am a control freak change my mind multiple times while cooking. Stove-top oats are a prime example.  More often than not, I have no clue where my bowl of oatmeal is heading when I start boiling water.  Yesterday morning I wasn’t in the mood for anything too sweet, so I decided to make (plain) Greek yogurt my breakfast’s main ingredient.  Sometimes tangy trumps sweet.  After adding the yog to a bowl, I… Read more >

Kiwi cure

I browse the health section of the Huffington Post online almost every day.  It’s one of my favorite online sources because they have an assortment of lighter stories mixed in with more controversial opinions pieces.  Today I read about a study in which IBS sufferers who ate two kiwis a day for 4 weeks found they had significant relief in irritable bowel related symptoms (most notably constipation).  Interesting. How cool would it be if the solution to all my GI woes were as simple as enjoying a couple of kiwis on a daily basis? Needless… Read more >

Making a salad a meal

Hi, I’m in a salad rut.  [never a bad thing]   As I’ve repeatedly blogged about, I’m a bit of a prep queen.  Whenever I know I have several shifts in a row, I make sure to prepare healthy and flexible food options ahead of time.  I hate coming home to an empty fridge (and after 12+ hours on my feet, I definitely don’t have the energy to start cooking a meal from scratch).  This week’s examples: Lentils & wheat berries.  [Soaking on stand-by] Veggies. [I always have greens, tomatoes, bell peppers, & carrots on… Read more >

The aroma of coconut

You know what this means, right? It means the baking bug hit. It means the kitchen smelled fan-f$%#ing-tastic today. It means I finally sent off the great fundraising act quinoa granola winner’s package.  [about effing time Elise] It means the apartment will have lingering coconut scents for the next few days…or until I next steam broccoli.  😉   Oops! Well, it was nice while it lasted. Baking for others feels like a transfer of love.  Or a practice of self control. I sampled the three clusters that escaped.  And that’s all! Let’s hope the postal… Read more >

12 miles/hr

Here’s a fun little “would you rather.” It’s pretty much the question that most Angelinos face on a daily basis.  Would you rather drive or ride your bike for 12 miles?  What if I told you the cycling route would be a guaranteed 60 minute commute, but you may or may not be in your car for 1-2 hours?  Welcome to my life. I chose the bike.   My parents are in So Cal this week to see all the new babies in the fam, so on Monday night they took us out to dinnah…. Read more >
