Real men eat plants

You know that phrase “real men eat meat”?   Well, real men eat plants, too.  Satiating meals with adequate micro and macronutrients can be made without animals.  And Kyle can attest to that. Lentil & barley stew.   Not only do real men eat plants, but they follow directions too! Black eyed pea succotash and white rice.   As you can see, I only have a leftover portion photographed.  You see, this dish was thrown together last week, but didn’t make it on the blog because Kyle ate most of it.  I never felt compelled… Read more >

Tofu technique

I will never make tofu any other way. I promise this technique will make everyone who previously thought they didn’t like tofu change their mind. And yes, there’s a recipe at the end of this post, too. But first, the technique. 1) Press extra firm tofu until it’s bone dry.  Ok, that’s an exaggeration, it doesn’t have to be completely dry, but the longer you press it, the better your tofu will turn out. 2) Slice your tofu into slabs ~1 cm thick. 3) Coat tofu slices in all purpose flour.  [I poured 1/2 cup… Read more >

Whole Foods vegan tempeh salad

I’ve been obsessed with Whole Foods’ vegan tempeh salad forever.  If it’s at the salad bar, I have a very hard time passing it up.  Sometimes I use the soup containers and just buy a 1/2 pint of it for a few days worth of meals…I add it to grains, greens, toast…anything and everything (click here for proof!). A google search combined with some of my own sleuthing (aka writing down the ingredient list off the WF container) produced this recipe… Whole Foods vegan tempeh salad (vegan, gluten free) 16 ounces tempeh (I like Lightlife’s… Read more >

Leafy Linkage (II)

Here are a few articles I’ve read lately that I found interesting enough to pass on to you: Finding the best running shoes for you <— This post has a video with tips, but the article portion references the original story written by the NYT which questions the claims made by many shoe companies about sneakers being able to prevent injuries.  My last 4 pairs of running shoes have all been the exact same ones (Asics).  Why mess with perfection. According to research, “compared with other athletic populations, the death rate in distance running, one… Read more >

Eating in & out

This past week has been work heavy, which is why I’ve been doing more recipe posts.  But my sister hates recipe posts prefers other material (and isn’t afraid to let me know it), so here’s a recap of my weekend. Starting with Friday…    I made peanut butter. I made a spinach and pumpkin seed pate. I made bread.   I made pancakes.   I ate pancakes. I made seitan. I made tofu.   And after spending most of the day in the kitchen, Kyle and I opted for a dinner out.  We walked to… Read more >
