Not that Nestle

I don’t get too political on HHH, but still, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that I’m a big fan of Marion Nestle. FYI, the fact she shares her name with this company makes Kyle giggle.    Considering what she promotes, it is pretty ironic. I subscribe to her blog Food Politics, which I highly recommend for anyone looking to stay current on important issues like pink slime, organic farming, GMO legislature, and other hot topics.  Her latest post deals with diet and weight loss which she addresses in her new book Why Calories… Read more >

Orange Julius

When I was in junior high, we had an elective called MASH.  It was made up of four subjects that we would rotate through over the year, one per quarter.  I can’t remember what the first two letters stood for (how pathetic!), but the “S” was for shop and the “H” was for home ec.  The reason I remember these is because they were the most impressionable.  I’d never touched a sanding machine and I had no clue how to sew before those classes.  In shop I made a jewelry box and a door knocker… Read more >

Easter winners

Last Easter was memorable in the worst possible way.  You always hope holiday shifts are going to be at least a touch more cheery and low key than regular ones.  Not handcuffs.  And definitely not assault. Overnight crock-pot grits. Spinach and… Read more >

Areas of Expertise

I consider myself an expert in two areas.  Hummus Granola Hippie staples, right?  I make damn good versions of both, but when it comes right down to it, certain brands can do wondrous things, thereby blowing my own creations out of the water.  We all know which hummus brand I prefer (I’m fairly transparent on the blog – hint: rhymes with jabra).    [Truthfully, I don’t think our fridge has been without Sabra.  Ever.] But until recently, I preferred my own quinoa granola to almost every store bought kind on the market.  This recipe gets… Read more >

The “healthiest” salad

The second #HAWMC prompt called for an inspiring quote.  I’m one of those cheesy losers that already has a collection saved in my gmail inbox.  I like motivation.  Here are some of my favorites. Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. -Thomas Jefferson Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. -Robert Collier I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure–which is:… Read more >
