Welcome to 5 stars

At first glance, the L’Auberge hotel looks rustic.  But once you tour the place, you start to notice it’s all a facade.    With satellite TV (not that I wanted to watch the Kardashians on vacation) and high tech gym equipment (in the tower’s top floor) and multiple places to lounge around outside while connected to the hotel’s (free) wi-fi…I’d say it was the perfect balance of old and new for a relaxing vacation.   Kyle and I went to the gym 4 of the 7 days we were there.  Not bad! We ordered… Read more >

Extra food & extra coworker time

The word “leftovers” implies the portion in question was at some point unwanted.    When you feast on farm fresh fare, this is most definitely not the case.  But (shocking as it may seem) there was food left over from dinner.   Swiss chard, grilled avocado, grilled bell peppers, and grape tomatoes (all from the farmer’s market), red quinoa, and vegan sausages.  For those who asked (all two of you), both Kyle and I looooved them.  I am typically skeptical of faux meat products, but Field Roast Grain Meat Co. has really legit ingredients.  We… Read more >

What I Ate Wednesday

I’ve never officially joined in on the WIAW festivities, but today’s is a special edition, so I knew I had to partake.  Unfortunately, I didn’t catch all my food on film (I forgot how hard it is to remember to take pics of every. single. thing!), but I did my best, despite being out and about for much of the day. My alarm went off at 8, but I didn’t get out of bed til 9.  I was reading, and loving every page, but eventually the call of coffee dragged me from the sheets.   I… Read more >

Kale vs. scale

My meals are breaking my back!  Fortunately, I have learned proper posture (even if I had to learn the hard way).  In all honesty though, nursing hasn’t re-aggravated my back pain in quite some time because I’ve been SO cautious in practicing good body mechanics. I’m happy to report that lugging all this loot on my back while biking to work didn’t hurt either.  But it really is heavy.  By the time I squeeze the zipper over my food, scrubs, klean kanteen, and coffee mug, my backpack is easily tipping the scales into the double… Read more >

Tasting the competition

I have made it my personal mission to try Surprisingly Vegan’s competition… It’s a hard job, but somebody’s gotta do it.*  Right? *False: nobody has to do it, this is an entirely self-imposed task Peanut butter melted on top of fresh strawberry slices on top of a frozen waffle.  All in the name of brand research… I will spare you the name of the company I tried here (it was also vegan and gluten free), but let the record state, the frozen varieties may as well be toast because there wasn’t much waffle flavor going… Read more >
